6 Nerves Involved in Sex

Published on 22 October 2024

Sexual arousal and response involve the activation of various nerves throughout the body, facilitating sensory input, and coordinating physiological responses. Here are six nerves involved in sex:

  1. Pudendal Nerve: The pudendal nerve is a major nerve of the pelvis and plays a crucial role in sexual sensation. It innervates the external genitalia, including the clitoris in females and the penis in males, transmitting tactile sensations and contributing to sexual arousal.
  2. Pelvic Nerve: The pelvic nerve supplies sensation to the pelvic organs, including the uterus, vagina, and rectum. It plays a role in transmitting sensations of pleasure and discomfort during sexual activity.
  3. Vagus Nerve: The vagus nerve is involved in regulating heart rate, breathing, and digestion, all of which can be influenced by sexual arousal. It also plays a role in facilitating relaxation and promoting feelings of intimacy and connection during sex.
  4. Sacral Nerves: The sacral nerves, specifically S2 to S4, are involved in controlling the muscles of the pelvic floor, including those involved in orgasm and ejaculation. These nerves also transmit sensory information from the genitals to the brain.
  5. Hypogastric Nerve: The hypogastric nerve supplies sensation to the pelvic viscera, including the uterus and bladder. It plays a role in transmitting sensations of fullness and pressure during sexual activity.
  6. Dorsal Nerve of the Clitoris/Penis: In females, the dorsal nerve of the clitoris transmits sensory information from the clitoris to the brain, contributing to sexual arousal. In males, the dorsal nerve of the penis serves a similar function, transmitting sensations from the penis to the brain during sexual activity.

These nerves work together to relay sensory information from the genitals and pelvic region to the brain, facilitating sexual arousal, pleasure, and orgasm.
